She is the director of the Netherlands Brain Bank, which has as its aim to provide researchers worldwide with well-documented brain tissue from brain donors with neurological and psychiatric brain disorders to use for their research. Huitinga and her Neuroimmunology group focus on inflammation and immune response in the brain. She also has a particular interest in MS (multiple sclerosis), an inflammatory brain disease, which she has been researching for over twenty years.
