Stage: Fundamental properties of voltage-gated sodium channels
The axon initial segment is a unique domain of the axon and is characterized by a high density of voltage-gated sodium channels, which underlie the initiation of action potentials. As part of an ongoing research project, we are interested in the specific gating properties of these sodium channels. To study voltage-gated channels in isolation, we have expressed constructs of sodium channel isoforms in HEK293 cells. You will learn biophysical techniques and combine whole-cell patch-clamp recording with live-cell imaging to study the molecular structure-function relationship of sodium channels. We are looking for a highly motivated and independent student, preferably with some experience or affinity with electrophysiology and/or live-cell imaging.
